![]() You are allowed a certain number of points missed before they fail you. ![]() You get points for all the things you mention. All of these items is properly mounted and secure with nuts, bolts, or screws that are not damaged, loose, or missing, and none of the items is broken, cracked, or damaged." When you learn the brakes, or the tires, for example, you can use the same spiel on every set of brakes or tires you come to. Luckily you can tie a lot of these together and mention them at once, like "the steering system includes the steering column, front and rear universal joints, the steering gear box, the Pittman arm, the drag link, the steering knuckle, and the tie rod. I've been told you need to mention and point out about 110 items, but I count more like 150 to 160. This is just as much stuff as I could remember right now. All of these are on YouTube or in the book from the DPS. After you do one of those you must also pre-trip the coupling, then get in and pre-trip the inside of the cab, then do the air brakes test. B is from the windshield back only the tractor. Card A is the front of the vehicle to about the windshield or firewall. You will get told at random whether you get an "A, B, C, or D" pre-trip card. You want to mention that you have a "current, fully charged fire extinguisher, three reflective triangles, and a fuse assortment of the appropriate sizes for the electrical system." If your truck has breakers and no fuses you need to tell the examiner that. You want to point out what color the lights are required to be in front and back. None of the glass has any "illegal stickers that would impede my view." The exhaust has no "signs of leaks such as soot." You specifically want to point out all the DOT reflective tape and say how much reflective tape is required on every side. Mention that the brake push rod and slack adjuster are connected with a clevis pin and cotter key. Mention that the steering system components are connected with castle nuts and cotter pins. You want to quote the tread depth for the steer tires (4/32") and the drive and tandem tires (2/32") and state that the steer tires can't be recaps. Also you say that the wheels have no illegal welds. You want to say the frame and cross members have no broken welds, and no illegal welds or drilled holes. ![]() You say if more than 1/4 of the leaf springs are broken you would place the vehicle out of service. When you get to the brake pads you mention that if they are worn to less than 1/4" at the thinnest point you would place the vehicle out of service. ![]() There are some specific things you WANT to say. Anything electrical you say that it isn't BCFLC (Burned, Cut, Frayed, or Loosely Connected.) Your tires are "ITO and ICD"- the Inside, Top, and Outside you check for Inflation, Condition, and (tread) Depth. If it is leaking you need to point out that you'd list it on your DVIR. Use the phrase " sounds/signs of leaking or hissing" (SOLOH). Anything that contains air of fluids you want to say that it isn't leaking. Your fan belt you also mention that it isn't TCF (Torn, Cut, or Frayed) and that you check the tightness by hand and it doesn't deflect 3/4" when pressed in the middle. Everything that isn't made of rubber you want to mention that it isn't "BCD." The ABC- Anything rubber is "not abraded, bulging, cut, cracked." I throw in that they aren't dry rotted, as well. The BCD- "not broken, cracked, or damaged. Learn these key words and catchy phrases all the examiners listen for "properly mounted and secure"- everything you check is properly mounted and secure except the frame and cross-members, as that is what everything is mounted to. ![]() #Cdl walk around manualSit down and list every piece of equipment mentioned in either the DPS CDL manual and also in whatever video you like best. ![]()
